La paura (The fear)

Pippo Delbono is not only one of the most important theatre directors in Italy today; he has also made numerous films, including »Guerra« (»War«, 2003) and »Grido« (»Outcry«, 2006). Merciless and yet far from any form of realism, his most recent film »La paura« (»The fear«) shows the scandalous conditions in his homeland.

Blanche neige (Snow White)

The famous French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj has created an enchanting, opulent dance fairytale with 26 dancers of his company in Southern French Aix-en-Provence based on the fairytale »Snow white« by the Brothers Grimm.

Die Räder im Getriebe (the wheels in motion)

Stage technology – a secret. Stage technology – invisible to most audience members. During the performances, the audience simply sees the stage design, hears the music, sees the lighting effects.

Abschlussball (Closing ball)

You only celebrate your 20th birthday once... The anniversary of euro-scene Leipzig is the occasion for a closing ball – a bit prettier and more festive than a party.

The new festival tone, a brief melody which will now be the acoustic identification of the festival, serves as a birthday cake for euro-scene Leipzig. The film »Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen« (»A glance behind the curtains«) by Bernd E. Gengelbach and Tilman König will provide the second piece of cake.

Ost-West-Passagen (East-West-Passages)

The exchange between Eastern and Western Europe received an enormous boost with the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. Collaborations between artists, festivals and European cooperation projects took the place of glances behind the Iron Curtain.

Inferno / Purgatorio / Paradiso

Romeo Castellucci belongs to the leading theatre artists of the present time. He was an Artiste associé (consulting artist) at the Festival d'Avignon 2008 where he brought out his trilogy based on Dante's »La divina commedia« (»The divine comedy«).

Mein Bild ist Dein Bild (My picture is your picture)

The workshop »Mein Bild ist Dein Bild« (»My image is your image«) comprises a training in contemporary dance and sequences in balance and creation. After that improvisation will be introduced to contemporary dance and theatre elements.

An afternoon with Alain Platel

The international victory march of Alain Platel and his company les ballets C de la B began with »Bonjour Madame … «. He came to Leipzig for the first time in 1996 – unfortunately too late for the piece »Bonjour Madame … «, which stopped being performed shortly before. There is no recording; only 7 minutes of a promotional video remain. »Bonjour Madame … « dealed with male arrogance and a crime committed out of boredom.

Empty moves (parts I & II)

Two women and two men dance abstractly in constantly changing new formations and structures of highest quality. Angelin Preljocaj choreographed this dance play following a reading by John Cage in 1977 which caused tumultuous reactions in Milan. An homage to the dance.

Twee stemmen (Two voices)

Dinner seems to be over; a man portrays five powerbrokers from our life and times. The renowned Dutch director Johan Simons created this brilliant-dialectic study with the wonderful actor Jeroen Willems based on texts by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Cor Herkströter, the former CEO of Shell.

Sávitrí

Princess Sávitrí wants to marry no one else but Prince Satiaván against all odds. Pavla Dombrovská created this enchanting shadow theatre based upon an Indian legend with one of the leading children's and puppet theatres in the Czech Republic.

Žabáci – Sny starého dědka (Frogs – The dreams of the old)

A whimsical old man lives in a dark forest and dreams of frog, toad, fish and other animals as friends. The fabulous puppet theatre play is based upon motives of the American author Arnold Lobel.

Lange Nacht des Tanzes (Long night of dance)

The competition in the conception by Alain Platel, Ghent, has already found tremendous success on nine occasions from 1997-2009. Based on seven dancers/choreographers their development since their appearance at that time will be shown.

Çifti Martin (The Martins)

A man and a woman meet in a train. An absurdist drama of a married couple develops from the shy conversation. Bekim Lumi staged the slapstick comedy between melodrama and musical, based on a text by Eugène Ionesco.

La menzogna (The lie)

A fire in the ThyssenKrupp plant in Turin in 2007 formed the starting point for this opulent play by Pippo Delbono. In a mixture of spoken and dance theatre, political cabaret and burlesque, he subjects his home country Italy relentless social criticism and is still full of human kindness.

Storia contemporanea dell'Africa. Vol. III (Contemporary history of Africa. Vol. III)

A father and his children silently gather around a sarcophagus. A theatre of gestures, inner images and strong associations by Romeo Castellucci, one of the most fascinating directors in Europe – presented with his own six children.

Sonja

The limited and ugly maid Sonja is transformed by love. Alvis Hermanis, Latvia's best-known director of the younger generation, staged this theatre play by the Russian author Tatjana Tolstaja with much poetry.

Prophezeiung 20/11 (Prophecy 20/11)

Are humans still able to show instinctive behaviour today? The Leipzig director Philipp J. Neumann devotes in an interdisciplinary approach to the equal treatment of other living creatures on the planet. Steffi Sembdner created the choreography, Hagen Tilp the moved objects. The piece won the project advertisement on the occasion of its anniversary.

Som faves (Some favorites)

This solo of radical performer Ivo Dimchev moves between intimacy and voyeurism. With his strong physical presence he creates an overwhelming mixture of genres between privacy and public, full of self-irony, wit and charm.

Out of context – for Pina

People at the edge of society seek protection, the subconscious comes to light. The celebrated Belgian choreographer Alain Platel shows a broad spectrum of humanity between passion, stillness and humour with nine fantastic dancers.
