Neue Szene

    Performance und Tanzstück

Estonia’s dance scene is young and not yet widely known internationally. Two artists are particularly notable for their originality and individuality: Renate Keerd and Mart Kangro.

Mart Kangro, born in 1974 in Tartu, was educated in dance at Tallinn University. He was a member of the Estonian state opera ballet company in Tallinn from 1996-2001. He also danced here the priest in Sergei Prokofjevs ballet »Romeo and Juliet«: »I had about 45 minutes before my next appearance. Usually I went straight to my dressing room, where I had a few books and magazines to read … But it was hard to concentrate on anything else as I was worried I might miss my next scene.« Kangro was encouraged to perform his solo »Mart on Stage« by it. He has worked as a dancer with Xavier Le Roy and in 2002 he was invited to take part in Thomas Lehmen’s »Schreibstück« project, as a choreographer.

Renate Keerd was born in 1978 in Pärnu. »Mobile home« is a journey through Estonian landscapes; a kind of surveying tour, with the typical Estonian curiosity for the unknown. Images from a film merge with elements of dance, and the solo gradually evolves into a duet. A man and a woman somewhere in rural Estonia, inlove with nature. She developed the trilogy »Mystical Sounds in the snoring night« from 1998 whilst studying at the cultural university in Viljandi. Some parts of »Mystical sounds … « have made guest appearances in Berlin, Gdánsk, Kaunas, Vilnius, Helsinki and Moscow. Renate Keerd and Mart Kangro have also been at the 2001 »Manöver« festival in Leipzig.
