The Contact Dance Company was founded in 1999 by Francesca Abela
Tranter. It is the only modern, professional dance company working
together permanently on Malta. The passionate, beautiful dancers are
striving to break through established traditions on the island, using
innovative forms and communicating in the diversity of western European
dance language persuasions. The company has made guest performances in
Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Croatia, India, Azerbaijan, Hungary and
Turkey. The guest appearance in Leipzig will be their first in Germany.
Francesca Abela Tranter, born in 1962 in St. Julians/Malta, was educated in dance in Great Britain and Malta. She has been teaching since 1982 and choreographing since 1988. She is the guest lecturer at a number of international dance festivals and responsible for the dance performances at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.
The two sets from suites by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) form part of »Three Pieces«, although the third set for 8 dancers is no longer performed. »Tempest« came after the »Bacchanale« by John Cage (1912-92), whose composition for piano and strings produces sounds both harmonic and aggressive with materials such as screws, bolts, rubbers, bamboo, textiles and wood; equating the human temperament with nature.
»Corpus« shows a long development of an individual type of music, individual movements and film material from a workshop with the composer Ruben Zahra, the theatre lecturer Stefano Bosco and Francesca Abela Tranter. The soundtrack was edited with the voices of the dancers. Video and live dances allow for the rare, direct comparison of film and stage.
