In 1994, Geert Jan Jansen’s arrest stunned the art world: the police found over 1,600 artworks that had been faked by Jansen – paintings that he had signed with the names Picasso, Appel, Matisse, Chagall and other masters of art history. Even though so many fakes were in circulation, numerous collectors as well as institutions only turned to the courts after being pressured by the police. Sometimes they even continued to claim the authenticity of works. Due to insufficient evidence, Jansen only served six months in jail in 2000.

The theatre company Berlin is known for its multimedia pieces that combine documentary theatre and fiction. »True copy« is a parable about the relativity of truth. Who is at fault in the end? The forger or the art market, whose greed then turned the fakes into originals?

Bart Baele, video, lighting and stage designer, and the actor Yves Degryse founded the Compagnie Berlin in their home city, Antwerp, in 2003. Both were born in 1977. The name of their company originated in their series of urban portraits titled »Holoceen« – they selected the name in the knowledge that they would end the series with the portrait of Berlin (planned for 2021). The second basis of their work, »Horror Vacui« from 2010, to which »True copy« belongs, is oriented towards human fates.
