and patron of the festivals 2007 – 2020

Tuesday, 21. September 2021 // 7.30 – 9.30 p.m.
Schauspielhaus Leipzig / Große Bühne

euro-scene Leipzig was meant to celebrate its 30th anniversary from 03. – 08. November 2020. 12 guest performances from 7 countries in 22 shows at 7 venues were planned under the motto »Alles nicht wahr« (»It simply ain’t so«). Unfortunately, the festival had to be cancelled because of Covid-19 – the federal government’s directive to forbid all events from 02.11.2020 because of the increasing numbers of infections came into effect one day before the planned opening of the festival. This was very unfortunate.

Burkhard Jung, mayor of the City of Leipzig and patron of euro-scene Leipzig, will recognize the 30th anniversary festival and long-term festival work by Ann-Elisabeth Wolff after the fact on Monday, 20. September 2021. He is combining his address with a guest performance by Nikolaus Habjan, Vienna, with his piece »F. Zawrel – erbbiologisch und sozial minderwertig« (»F. Zawrel – genetically and socially inferior«) at the Schauspielhaus Leipzig (2nd performance: Tuesday, 21. September 2021). This guest performance was planned for euro-scene Leipzig 2020 and can now be realized.

Nikolaus Habjan from Vienna is one of the most important artists for euro-scene Leipzig. As a puppet builder and puppeteer, actor and director, he has been a guest of euro-scene Leipzig multiple times since 2016. His piece »F. Zawrel – erbbiologisch und sozial minderwertig« is one of the most magnificent and disturbing theatre pieces of the last few years. Ann-Elisabeth Wolff selected it for her farewell. Nikolaus Habjan calls it his »heartfelt personal favourite«.

The piece is based on the true fate of Friedrich Zawrel, who survived the euthanasia crimes of the German occupation of Austria during the Second World War as a child. The play by Nikolaus Habjan and his puppets has an enormous emotional power and belongs to the best of what modern theatre has to offer today. In 2012, the piece was awarded the Nestroy Prize, Austria’s most important theatre prize.

Inviting Alain Platel, Ghent, to Leipzig again for this honorary event is also being considered. He is one of the most important choreographers of our time and, over the course of several years, was a guest of euro-scene Leipzig with a total of nine pieces. The plan was to show the film recording of his piece »C(h)œurs« from the Teatro Real, Madrid, during the 30th anniversary festival. The film will now be shown at the Schauspielhaus on 20. and 21. September 2021.

Since the first festival in 1991 to 1993, Ann-Elisabeth Wolff was responsible for multiple areas, for example, being involved in the programme as well as responsible for press and public relations. After the death of the festival’s founder Matthias Renner in October 1993, she took over the general directorship and artistic direction of euro-scene Leipzig until 2020. Her successor will be Christian Watty from 2021.
