Piece by Alain Platel and Arne Sierens

Two houses, two families. The solitude of the Indian – in the midst of the vibrant life of the big city. Does the family still offer the protection of an Indian reservation today or does one instead try to find freedom in one’s independence? Everyday scenes of leaving and coming back, of brute force and clumsy tenderness

Alain Platel, born in Ghent in 1956, describes in his last turbulent play a moving spectrum of life and sees not in perfection, but in handicaps, an expression of humanity. Together with the Belgian author Arne Sierens he created the plays »Moeder en kind« (»Mother and child«) and »Bernadetje«.

No other director is capable of showing ordinary life as it apparently is and yet to stylise so starkly that reality so naturally turns into art. Excellent professional actors and brilliant laymen and women act in the multileveled scenes – very lively, loud and moving.

»Allemaal Indiaan« is Alain Platel’s fourth play, after »La tristeza cómplice« (1996), »Bernadetje« (1997), and »lets op Bach« (1998), invited to the euro-scene Leipzig. The atmosphere of »Allemaal Indiaan« is quite fierce and brutal, of little hopefulness, at least less than in his last productions, but it nonetheless contains great moments that show the need for affection, human understanding and a feeling of the eternal flow of life.

»Allemaal Indiaan« will be Alain Platel’s last play (since he intends to retire from theatre). This play is a treasure of contemporary European theatre, which can only be seen in selected cities and has been hugely successful from Brussels and Paris to London and Rome, at the Salzburg Festival and the Avignon Festival.
