TEXTE IM KÖRPER, TEXTE IM RAUM (Texts in the Body, Texts in Space)

A practical theater translation workshop with Frank Weigand

Theater translation is a communicative and dialogical activity. For two days, the participants of the workshop will translate individual scenes from foreign-language theater texts into German – in direct exchange with two actors. The selected scenes by contemporary playwrights from Europe, West Africa, the Middle East and North America focus on questions of identity and attribution in the context of a present characterized by migration movements. Together we will examine the text fragments from philological, cultural studies and theatre practice perspectives. Finally, we will develop a staged reading that will be presented as part of the festival.

The workshop is aimed at students of various philologies (Romance, English and German studies) as well as translation, literature and theater scholars and people with a practical interest in theater. Practical translation experience and knowledge of French are not essential, but will enrich the project.
