ARTE / SWR, Germany / Iran / USA 2021, Sarvnaz Alambeigi, documentary, 80 min.
Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, dance in Iran has been under state surveillance. Along with many other people, the internationally recognized members of the National Ballet fled into exile and the multifaceted history of Iranian dance was forgotten. Nevertheless, in a hidden studio in Tehran, a group of young dancers secretly developed choreographies on themes such as faith, fear and sexuality. When filmmaker Sarvnaz Alambeigi discovers historical footage of the former national ballet, the idea arises to bring the exiled dancers together with the younger generation.
Sina Saberi, one of the film's protagonists, will be presenting his new production BASIS OF BEING نرگس at this year's euro-scene Leipzig. He will be on site for a discussion at the ARTE film screening.
