Who is allowed to travel, and who is stopped?

sinthujan varatharajah’s new book examines the unevenly distributed freedom to move through the world. Tourism appears here not as an innocent leisure activity, but as a Western cultural practice closely connected to privilege, borders and colonial power relations. Poetic and political at once, varatharajah looks at a world in which some places are accessible to some people at any time, while remaining out of reach for others.

sinthujan varatharajah lives in Berlin as an independent scholar and essayist. After studying political geography, varatharajah worked for several years for human-rights organisations in London and Berlin and focuses in particular on statelessness, displacement, borders and colonial modernity.
