SCHWANENSEE, based on the music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, is one of the most famous works of classical ballet and thus also representative for a certain idealized body image. It continues to shape our viewing habits and expectations about dance until the present day. The Swiss choreographer Alessandro Schiattarella, with the six dancers, takes a critical and personal look at iconic ballet. What is generally seen to be “normal” or “beautiful”? What mechanisms of exclusion and repression are hidden here? The FORWARD DANCE COMPANY has the objective of questioning both aesthetically and discursively established ways of thinking and power relationships, as well as of discovering unresearched dance vocabulary.
Alessandro Schiattarella was born in Naples and worked as a dancer with renowned choreographers such as Maurice Béjart, Marco Goecke and Koen Augustijnen, for example. He danced in Europe’s best companies: les ballets C de la B, Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Ballet du Grand Théâtre in Genf, Ballett Theater Basel and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, among others. Ever since he has been affected by a rare illness called Hirayama Syndrome, he has been successfully developing his own choreographic projects with which he has been touring internationally. The German premiere of SULLE SPONDE DEL LAGO – AM UFER DES SEES continues the cooperation with the FORWARD DANCE COMPANY that is headquartered at the LOFFT – DAS THEATER as associate artists. The new piece is being created as a coproduction of euro-scene Leipzig and ROXY Birsfelden in Switzerland, where the world premiere will take place on 20 October.
