In Ovid's Metamorphoses, Pygmalion takes refuge in celibacy after his encounter with the sexually dominant Propoetidae women wears down the proud sculptor's ego. With her perfect beauty and submissiveness, the ivory statue of Galatea, which he created himself, finally makes him happy: his ideal woman, soon brought to life by Venus, the goddess of love. Brazilian choreographer Pol Pi sees in this story the founding myth of all fantasies about the female body and reduces this patriarchal view to absurdity by decorating himself with fruit and transforming himself into an object of phantasmagorical sensuality. Tropical colors and whipped cream on bare skin play with images of fertility, conception and procreation as they shift between masculinity and femininity. Reflecting these metamorphoses, the body in ME TOO, GALATEA becomes a festival of visual and intellectual reflections that challenge conventional, patriarchal role models. The title of the piece refers to the #MeToo movement and questions our morality in relation to the body as an object of desire. Pol Pi and his colorful delicacies thus engage in an intriguing, subtle game of projections. And while the political significance of this multi-layered metaphor cannot be denied, especially in times of arch-conservative campaigns, Pi creates images that celebrate poetic and refreshing notes.

Biography POL PI

POL PI

A dancer for more than 10 years, a musician since early childhood and a choreographer as a field of study, Pol Pi is a transmasculine Brazilian dance artist based in France since 2013.

He has been creating and sharing performances since 2007 in Brazil and since 2017 in France and Europe, where he founded the NO DRAMA company. Pol has a degree in classical music from the University of Campinas (Brazil) and completed the master’s degree in choreography exerce at the CCN in Montpellier (2013-2015). Before encountering contemporary dance, he studied music, theatre and butoh. He has worked as a professional musician for over ten years, but also as an actor, musical director, director of two comic operas, and sound designer for theatre, dance and a short film.

With the company NO DRAMA, Pol Pi has created the solos ECCE (H)OMO (2017), ALEXANDRE (2018), ME TOO, GALATÉE (2018), LÀ (2019), Schönheit ist Nebensache ou la beauté s’avère accessoire (2021) and la grotte (2024), as well as the trio daté·e·s (2020) and the quartet IN YOUR HEAD (2022 - in collaboration with the Berlin music ensemble Kaleidoskop).

His work has already been presented in venues and contexts such as the Centre national de la danse, the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine Saint-Denis, the Montpellier Danse Festival, the Musée de la Danse, the CNDC, the Antistatik Festival/Sofia and the Transforma Festival/ Sevilla, Festival NEXT/Espace Pasolini, PACT Zollverein/Essen, La Raffinerie/Charleroi Danse, Centre Pompidou, Mercat de les Flors/Barcelona, Musée Tripostal, MacVal, Akademie der Künste, Radialsystem/Berlin, Festival Far Nyon, FIAC-Bahia, Bienal SESC de Dança, Bienal de Dança de Fortaleza, among others.

Pol has been sharing his dance practices for over 20 years, working with amateur groups, the medical-social sector, the queer community, art schools and dance training courses. He is currently interested in intuitive listening as a mode of creation, altered states of consciousness, care as an artistic practice and creation as an approach to care. He is currently learning to dance with horses near his home in Dordogne.
