A reinterpretation of the biblical Passion story against the backdrop of displacement, exploitation and human dignity in the tomato fields of southern Italy
What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his disciples be? In the southern Italian city of Matera – known for its notorious refugee camp – Milo Rau returns to the origins of the Gospel and stages it as the Passion play of a society marked by injustice and inequality.
Together with Yvan Sagnet from Cameroon, a former farm worker and activist, he formulates a new message for the 21st century: a manifesto of solidarity with the poorest, a cinematic uprising for a fairer, more humane world.
