Hip-hop is a dance of pride and liberation, a dance in which you celebrate yourself, says Yvon Soglo, alias Crazy Smooth, choreographer of IN MY BODY. A big ego, then? Perhaps… And then there is the name itself: crazy smooth. Yet that already challenges the cliché that the B-Boy – as male breaking virtuosos call themselves – must be a tough guy through and through. Crazy Smooth knows from experience that this self-image does not last forever, especially in such an athletic dance culture, founded on battles and the ideal of invincibility.

That is the point: B-Boys and B-Girls grow older too. What then? Crazy Smooth invites the younger generation to celebrate their dance culture together, share insights into their backgrounds and redefine their presence on stage. The result is an encounter between nine B-Boys and B-Girls that is passionate, exhilarating and full of optimism.

IN MY BODY paints an impressive picture of how a dance culture lives on across generations. Individual virtuosity becomes community; competition becomes solidarity. Carried by disarmingly honest self-portraits, the ensemble celebrates the power of togetherness. Once a B-Boy, always a B-Boy? For all the individual strength on display, the piece shows how far mutual support can carry us. With infectious rhythms and striking lighting, the piece ultimately celebrates not the individual ego, but the strength of the group.
